The most cosmopolitan area of the city
Right in the centre of Madrid, very close to Gran Vía, the Chueca neighbourhood stretches along the dozens of small streets that cross from east to west the Barquillo and Fuencarral streets.
Chueca is a small neighbourhood, but its streets are full of life, it’s one of the most cosmopolitan ones in the city, and the centre to the gay movement in Madrid and Spain.
It used to be a place to avoid, and very few frequented its streets, as it was a neighbourhood related to drugs and prostitution. Since the 90’s, the local gay community started to settle in the area, attracted by the irresistible charm of the 1900’s buildings. Once Chueca started to evolve, it began to have a wide variety of traditional shops, restaurants, nightclubs or cafés, and also a great number of services dedicated to the gay community such as sex shops or saunas.
